Germany’s Antitrust Watchdog Challenges Amazon’s Pricing Algorithms
Germany’s Federal Cartel Office has issued a warning to Amazon over its algorithmic pricing controls, alleging potential violations of EU and national competition laws. The regulator contends Amazon’s opaque marketplace rules artificially constrain third-party sellers by imposing price caps and manipulating product visibility based on proprietary metrics.
"Amazon’s dominance in German e-commerce allows it to distort competition through unilateral pricing governance," said Andreas Mundt, president of the antitrust authority. The company’s practice of demoting listings deemed "non-competitive" in search results raises particular concerns given Amazon’s dual role as both platform operator and direct competitor.
